  • A sign in a Volg in Eastern Switzerland advertises Dubler’s “Mohrenkenken” as “protein mass with a migration background”.
  • The offer caused a shit storm on social media.
  • Volg has since removed the sign. The tone was clearly missed, it says there.

Since the “Black Lives Matters” movement, the term “Mohrenkopf” for the well-known sweet pastry has been highly controversial. While some people see it as a clearly racist name, others defend the name as a Swiss tradition. A Volg branch is now drawing the “Mohrenkopf” debate through the cocoa on a sign, as a tweet shows. “With chocolate covered with Eiwiissmassä with a migration background :-)”, this praises the Dubler “Mohrenkenken”. The campaign causes a stir on Twitter.

«Is that your Ernst Volg? Or do you just want to emphasize the proximity to the SVP again? », Angry Thomas Häfliger, who posted the sign on Twitter. According to Häfliger, the photo of the offer has been circulating on Facebook and Whatsapp since Thursday. Compared to 20 minutes, he suspects that there is a “verbal derailment of a funny branch manager”. Other users also think the choice of words is inappropriate. Either you sell the product or not, sends a critic ahead. “But this product labeling is beyond!” A user even anticipates that Volg could face an image problem.

“Stupid prank cookie?”

Some are mocking the possible author of the sign. “Is the branch management on vacation and the Schildlimacher a stupid joke?” Asks a Twitterer. Columnist Peter Schneider shows that in his opinion the joke really went wrong. «Thigh tapping! Loud-mouthed smile! Lustighab », says his comment.

However, some users consider the excitement about the product description to be exaggerated. SVP politician Michael Frauchiger Thomas Häfliger asks whether he already knows that the sign is a fake. Common sense should be enough to understand the message. A Twitterer joins in: «Yes, left-wing mind controller. It is a fake. Even if it were an exhilarating idea with all the hysterical terrorism of the left by Black lives Matter. » For a user, the reactions testify to hypersensitivity. «Scandal OMG scandal. No one hears me hello!?!?! They sit in the Volg and joke about our alliance. I have to let my frustration out on Twitter right away! »

Shield had been removed

“The sign in question comes from a Volg store in the Eastern Switzerland region,” says Luana Covre, communications specialist at Volg Konsumwaren AG. According to the current state of knowledge, it was created by an employee on her own initiative and was only used in the branch concerned. “The sign has since been removed.”

Against the background of the controversial public discussion about the correct labeling of sweets, place names and other names, the tone here was clearly missed, said Covre. “We regret the incident and will sensitize our shop staff accordingly.”
