Volcanic eruption in the Canary Islands; several thousand evacuated / Article

A volcanic eruption has begun on the island of Palma in the Spanish Canary Archipelago.

At least five thousand people have already been evacuated due to the eruption of the volcano, and lava currents have destroyed several houses.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also arrived on Sunday evening to assess the situation on the ground.

“We are monitoring the fires that could result from the eruption very closely. We will assign firefighters to the Civil Guard, which is already here, as well as the State Police, “said Sanchez.

The island has a total population of 83,000 and has been called upon by the authorities to remain calm. A possible eruption in the south of the island of Palma has been warned for several days due to intense seismic activity. Residents were advised to prepare light luggage, mobile phones, important documents and medicines in case of an evacuation. The last time a volcanic eruption occurred in Palma was in 1971, when it lasted for more than three weeks.
