VodafoneZiggo: 5G via Dynamic Spectrum Sharing is real 5G – Tablets and telephones – News

VodafoneZiggo says that 5G via Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, where 5G shares a frequency with 4G, is true 5G. The company has had this tested by TNO. The CEO of parent company Vodafone Group said on Monday that 5G is misleading consumers via DSS.

VodafoneZiggo emphasizes in a response to Tweakers that TNO has had it tested whether 5G via DSS complies with the standards as drawn up by the umbrella organization GSM Association. “5G in the Netherlands is formally certified and meets all GSMA standards and requirements set by TNO,” said spokesman Faris El Moussaoui.

Nick Read, CEO of parent company Vodafone Group, said Monday that 5G over DSS is not true 5G and misleads customers. “It’s effectively showing you a 5G symbol, but giving you 4G performance. What we said as a company is, we don’t want that, because it’s misleading for consumers and businesses. What you want is 5G built the right way. , with true 5G performance. “

In the Netherlands, VodafoneZiggo uses 5G at 1800MHz, where it shares frequency space with Vodafone’s own 4G network: this is called Dynamic Spectrum Sharing. VodafoneZiggo is the only Dutch provider that uses DSS. VodafoneZiggo is a joint venture of the Vodafone Group and Liberty Global.

VodafoneZiggo underlines Read’s point that the 3.5GHz frequency is important for offering 5G. El Moussaoui: “Naturally, we are urging the government to make the 3.5 GHz spectrum band available so that we can offer the full range of 5G experiences and use cases to Dutch consumers and businesses.”

The 3.5 GHz band will not be available in the Netherlands until 2022, because only then is the auction. First, the satellite station in the Frisian Burum has to move to another location; it operates on the 3.5 GHz band and therefore for that entire frequency band in the northern half of the country, no other use is allowed.
