Led by Pierre-Olivier Bigot, singing teacher and choir director at the intercommunal conservatory of Châteaubriant-Derval (Loire-Atlantique), the vocal ensemble Vocadélys, from Ombrée-d’Anjou (Maine-et-Loire), will cross the Atlantic to participate in a large-scale concert.

Monday November 13, 2023, twelve choristers from the region of Châteaubriant will, in fact, play at Carnegie Hall, in New York, with 150 choristers from around the world, for the world premiere of Twilight mass by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo.

The group spotted on the internet

“We will be the only French representatives,” underlines Pierre-Olivier Bigot. It was through a video posted on the choir director’s website that Vocadélys was spotted. “When I was told I had received an email from the United States, I thought it was a prank. I still wonder how we, a small choir from Maine-et-Loire, were spotted. It is the fruit of the work of a group. »

Since then, the troop has been preparing to respond to the event.

We are focused. You’ll have to be ready, because it’s a work that has lots of subtlety of rhythm. We really have to respect the score, down to the comma, because we will be 150 other singers.

And this time, Vocadélys intends to travel. Covid obliges, this could not have been the case in 2020. “Three years ago, we were already supposed to leave for New York, for this same project. But, due to the health crisis, the American president closed the border the morning of our departure. So here, we keep our fingers crossed” underlines the professor.

For the moment, I don’t believe it. I live day by day, telling myself that we are getting closer to the date, without getting excited.

In parallel with the show, Pierre-Olivier Bigot and his singers also aim to “discover a country”, a “way of life”. “You have to live this experience,” he insists. “We will come away with lots of memories. That’s wonderful. »
