Vítor Murta Resigns as Boavista President After Defeat Against Braga

After the defeat against Sp. Braga, Vítor Murta announced his resignation as president of SAD do Boavista. The decision comes after the director was challenged by fans when the checkered team was being thrashed by Braga.

«The mass of fans made comments and chants regarding the president of the Board of Directors of SAD do Boavista. Football is made of emotions. I’ve been president of the club for six years and of SAD for around three, but everything has a beginning and an end. As I said, it was the partners who put me in this position and who gave me the pleasure of being president of Boavista and, inherently, of SAD. Sometimes fans have short memories, which is normal. It’s football. They forget that when I arrived, the club didn’t pay holiday or Christmas bonuses, that it didn’t have a decent field to train on and that it was experiencing enormous difficulties. Today we are not well, but we are better and we have a future”, he began by saying, in the Bessa press room.

«We have a project for a future Boavista academy, in Vila Nova de Gaia. But like I said, everything has a beginning and an end. I feel like I did a positive job. About 15 days ago, we finished another debt process that Boavista had: 1.5 million euros to Jaime Pacheco and other players from that time. We’ve been paying off 20-year-old debts. And like this one, we’ve already paid dozens. (…) I believe 101 percent that we will stay in the League because I believe in these players. But, therefore, I want to say that I have already informed the majority shareholder and will inform the president of the General Council of SAD that I am ending my duties as president of SAD. I will only enter management despite the shareholder having invited me for another term. I understand that it is important to focus on the players and that they are supported by the fans”, he added.

Vítor Murta also reinforced that this decision should have been taken sooner and regretted the fact that he was “mistreated in his own home”.

«I am a destabilizing factor since people spend more time addressing me in inappropriate terms than supporting the team. As Boavista is in first place… I have been a member for around 40 years, my family is Boavista and no one likes coming to the stadium to be mistreated by their family, I made this decision. I will only take current management actions. (…) I wish my successor the best of luck,” he clarified.

The director also left the possibility of not running again for president of the club, whose term ends at the end of the year.

«My mandate ends at the end of the year. I will have to meet with my management to find out what will be done. The club and SAD must go hand in hand. It is important that there is harmony. So I will consider. I haven’t made any decision regarding the club yet. Many think that Boavista is just football, but it is more than that. Every month we have to find solutions for the present, but also for the past. Every month we have costs that exceed one million euros. I leave with the players’ salaries up to date. I had already received January and whoever succeeds me will find solutions to pay for February. The employees have already received their salary in December and before I leave, they will receive their salary for January. I will leave with my salaries paid so that nothing will be pointed out to me. (…) I wish, from the bottom of my heart, that everyone who was on the bench today insulting the president of their club is right and that whoever succeeds me will be able to better solve Boavista’s problems”, he concluded.

Boavista lost 0-4 against Sp. Braga and occupies 12th place in the league table with 24 points, two more than Portimonense, who is in the play-off place. Coach Ricardo Paiva did not speak to journalists after the match.
