Vitamin E Also Serves To Increase Immunity

JAKARTA, Investor.id Vitamin E is synonymous with nutrition for skin health. But you know, vitamin E is also useful for maintaining endurance or immunity so that needs must be fulfilled every day, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Vitamin E is a very essential nutrient and is needed by our bodies. Vitamin E deficiency can cause dry skin and also reduce immunity, “said dr. Michael Reo, medical manager of PT Darya-Varia Laboratoria Tbk. in a press release.

In terms of increasing endurance, vitamin E functions in three ways. First, maintaining the integrity of the skin structure (epidermal brear) to prevent the entry of microorganisms (viruses and bacteria) into the body.

“Second, vitamin E activates the body’s immune system, such as increasing the activity of antibodies and natural killer cells to fight foreign objects (viruses and bacteria) that enter the body,” explained Dr. Michael.

Third, vitamin E also helps prevent damage to the immune cells (immune cells) from free radicals so that the immune cells can function properly to fight viruses or bacteria that enter our bodies. The immune cells include neutrophils, macrophages, NK cells, lymphocytes, and T cells.

Meanwhile, continued Dr. Michael, many studies have shown that vitamin E as an antioxidant is very useful in helping protect body cells, including skin cells from free radical damage. In healthy skin, each layer contains vitamin E, which must be maintained daily. Research shows that in unhealthy skin (dry, dull, rough), the vitamin E levels in each layer are reduced.

As an antioxidant, vitamin E can prevent the oxidation process by free radicals (such as ultraviolet rays from the sun, pollution, dust, air conditioning, motor vehicle fumes) on skin cells and prevent the formation of toxic oxidation products. For example, vitamin E scavenges peroxyl free radicals which are the result of peroxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. In addition, vitamin E also functions to maintain the stability and integrity of the membrane of skin cells and protect its components from the toxicity of various drugs, heavy metals, and other chemicals that will form free radicals.

Vitamin E also functions as a protection against sunlight, because of its antioxidant content. Vitamin E applied to the skin can absorb the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted by the sun. “Increased effect photoprotective which is produced by vitamin E allows our bodies to minimize the damage caused by UV rays. This can help prevent the formation of dark spots and wrinkles on the skin, ”said Dr. Michael.

Apart from being an antioxidant, vitamin E is also useful for maintaining skin moisture. “This is because every layer of the skin contains vitamin E which prevents excessive evaporation of water from the skin, thus preventing dry skin,” explained Dr. Michael.

Green vegetables and nuts

Vitamin E intake is obtained from consuming several types of foods such as vegetable oil, green vegetables such as spinach, cereals with additional nutrients, eggs, and nuts. In fact, the intake of vitamin E through these foods is not sufficient for the levels needed by the body. “Therefore, additional vitamin E intake with supplement consumption is highly recommended by the medical world,” said Dr. Michael.

Vitamin E supplements derived from natural ingredients (d-alpha-tocopherolsuch as wheat germ extract and sunflower seed extract, is twice as absorbed by the body as synthetic vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopherol). The absorption of this natural vitamin E intake will be more comfortable and effective when consumed in the form of soft capsules or so-called soft capsule.

To get the benefits of vitamin E, of course, you need a vitamin E supplement dosage that is safe and effective for long-term use. Vitamin E at a dose of 100 IU (International Units) is recommended for those who have skin problems such as dull skin, acne which is usually experienced at the age of under 25 years. The dose can be increased again if the skin condition is a bit dry.

Meanwhile, for those who have dry or dry skin with various kinds of dense activities indoors and outdoors, it is recommended to consume vitamin E at a dose of 300 IU per day. Skin conditions like this are usually experienced at the age of over 25 years.

“The recommended dosage is still below the maximum dose of vitamin E per day, which is 400 IU, which is the maximum dose of vitamin E per day set by the Food and Drug Administration of the Republic of Indonesia, so it is safe for long-term use,” said dr. Michael. .
