Accommodation in New York is undeniably quite expensive. It is possible to find inexpensive Airbnbs if you do it well in advance. Otherwise, some hotels may offer unbeatable prices, especially in the Chinatown area, if you are willing to forget your comfort for a few days.
The couchsurfing (being accommodated for free on the sofa of a resident), is a very rich and completely free alternative, as long as there are few people traveling.
