Virus Madness must not demonstrate and calls on people not to come

Acting mayor Johan Remkes of The Hague also banned a demonstration of Virus Madness last week, to which the group also responded by instituting summary proceedings. After that ban, protesters appeared on the Malieveld last Sunday. After that, disturbances arose. About 400 people were arrested.

Remkes fears ‘serious disorder’ again. Moreover, according to the municipality, the organizers would not be willing or able to ensure an ‘orderly course’. The court held on Saturday to the ban imposed by acting mayor Johan Remkes.

“Don’t come to the Malieveld”

The Virus Madness lawyer calls for not to come to the Malieveld. “We do not want to repeat the riots last week and therefore call on people not to come to the Malieveld,” says lawyer Jeroen Pols of Virus Madness.

‘The Netherlands has already suffered enough damage from the measures. Apparently we are not entitled to a demonstration and therefore will no longer invest energy. We are going to focus on another action that we need everyone for. We will come out with more details next week. “

“Completely irresponsible”

Mayor Remkes also urges not to come to the Malieveld. Being present at a prohibited demonstration is punishable, also in a personal capacity. “What’s even more annoying is that the people who call for” just to go and don’t mind a ban “because this would be an attack on the rule of law is actually creating a situation of lawlessness and chaos,” says Remkes. “That is completely irresponsible.”

Remkes also mentions the argument that there are signs that groups want to come to The Hague who are out for chaos and violence. “It is naive to think that if you behave peacefully, all those around you will do the same. The police are doing everything they can to prevent things from going wrong. You can help them by not standing in between. ” The Hague police remain prepared for anything, a spokesperson told the WE. The police do not assume that everyone will observe the ban on demonstration. “We are not surprised,” said the spokesman.

Councilor worried that things will get out of hand

The Hague alderman Boudewijn Revis (VVD) expects things to get out of hand on Sunday. “I’m afraid so,” he said radio program Spuigasten on The Hague FM. He thinks it is ‘idiot’ that people – despite the ban – still call for the Hague.

“What I am also concerned about is that people are now saying,” We want this mayor to ensure that there are no riots in this city. ” Well, if all those people do come, then there will be riots, and I hope the police will act hard to ensure that the injunctions and the ordinance are complied with. “
