Everything indicates that the borders of Australia will be closed until 2021. This is a nightmare for emigrants. – After the cancellation of holidays in Poland during the Polish summer, many of us hoped that they would be able to postpone it to December. Unfortunately, these plans are also in question – says Żaneta Branch, the author of the blog “A Polish woman in Australia writes”.
Ilona Raczyńska: First fires, now a pandemic – it was not an easy year for Australians. How do they endure this?
Żaneta Branch: This is true. We started the year with a national debate on the legitimacy of organizing a firework show in Sydney in the face of fires consuming part of the continent. The devastation of the east coast of Australia turned out to be huge, 18 million ha burned, 34 people were killed, about 3 thousand people lost their homes, some animal species were irretrievably lost.
I remember thousands of people all night smoking in a cloud of smoke on the beach, hiding from the fire that surrounded them. They were later evacuated from there by military ships. These were difficult months that still remind us of various consequences. It is estimated that one billion animals, as well as many species of bats and insects, will die in the coming months as a result of the loss of habitats and food sources. These consequences are only part of a much larger crisis, as a result of which biodiversity is rapidly decreasing. In addition, the oppressive and prolonged smoke that has accumulated in the air for most of the summer has also left its consequences in the form of respiratory disorders, bronchitis or asthma exacerbation in many residents of Sydney, Melbourne or Canberry.
