Virologist Christian Drosten fears that a pandemic may break out due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. “I think there is still a very small chance that you can contain the whole thing. But this chance is getting smaller and in principle we have to prepare for a pandemic, ”said the director of the Institute of Virology at the Berlin Charité on Thursday on Deutschlandfunk. The Charité deals specifically with the new corona virus.

He thinks it is important that citizens now “deal with this clinical picture and understand what it actually means, what kind of disease it is,” said Drosten. He found the development of a vaccine against the virus within 18 months to be “optimistic”. This vaccine not only had to be produced, but also delivered and then used.
“It all has to be organized and there we are with the real problem, and that’s the same with and without a vaccine. We have to be prepared for a pandemic without a vaccine from time to time, to put it bluntly, and the burden here is on the healthcare system, ”said the virologist.
