Viral Hospital Rejects Papuan Boy to Die on the Road, Indonesian Navy Apologizes

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Navy apologize for the child’s death case Papua positive for Covid-19 which was rejected at the Lantamal XI Hospital in Merauke. They reasoned that they only directed patients to hospitals that had pediatricians.

It is known that the incident had gone viral on social media. The victim who died was then buried at the Tanah Miring TPU which was attended by the Hospital and Lantamal XI.

“The Navy (TNI AL) apologizes and will carry out an investigation regarding the viral video containing patient rejection content by the Lantamal XI Merauke Naval Hospital,” quoted from the Navy’s official release, Saturday (26/2).

“Thus causing disappointment to the family over the handling of the Lantamal XI RSAL which ultimately resulted in fatalities,” the statement continued.

The Indonesian Navy said that this incident began when the Lantamal XI Hospital in Merauke arrived with a patient, a 10-year-old child, Adriana Mahuse. Because they do not have a pediatrician, RSAL officers “directed the patient’s family to take him to Merauke Hospital”.

This is because the hospital has pediatricians and more complete facilities so that patients immediately receive maximum treatment. “However, this decision has a long tail which causes the patient’s family to feel unwelcome at the RSAL and makes it viral in the mass media,” continued the Indonesian Navy.

Head of Lantamal XI Hospital Marine Lieutenant Colonel (K) Nursito, in a press conference, Saturday (26/02), explained that when examined in the car the patient’s condition “was conscious and stable and allowed to be taken to Merauke Hospital”. Moreover, the distance between the two hospitals is only 100 meters.

“However, in the middle of the journey, the patient, who had been treated by the Merauke General Hospital four days earlier due to COVID-19, died,” the statement said.

Apart from the reasons above, Deputy Commander of Lantamal XI Merauke Marine Colonel (F) Hari Widjajanto will evaluate this incident.

“I investigated and traced this incident whether there was negligence on the part of the Lantamal XI RSAL, if there was I would process it in accordance with applicable law,” he said.

Similarly, the Head of the Naval Information Service, First Admiral Julius Widjojono, stated that strict action would be taken if the investigation later proved that there was negligence on the part of the RSAL officers.

“If it has been proven to have violated, there is not a single member of the Indonesian Navy who is guilty of escaping the legal snares. This issue needs to be followed up,” said Kadispenal.

Previously, the Navy had mediated between the victim’s family and the Lantamal XI RSAL.

“And resolved on a family basis. RSAL Lantamal XI promised to process further when there is an error from RSAL staff in accordance with the demands of the family,” the statement said.
