Viral Doctor Makes IDI a match for Terawan’s impact ‘fired’, this is the fact

Later viral on social media Facebook posts saying that many doctors have decided to leave the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI). The narrative claims that a number of doctors chose to create a rival IDI, as a form of resistance to the permanent dismissal of Dr. Terawan Agus Putranto from IDI membership.

Here’s the story that went viral:

“With the expulsion of Dr Terawan from IDI, in solidarity with the doctors, they all left IDI and established a rival IDI under the name IDSI (All Indonesian Doctors Association). It means that IDI is over, which turns out to be mostly cadrun. #savedokterawan”.

However, this information was confirmed to be a hoax. Quoted from the official Kominfo website, this narrative is wrong. In fact, there is no official information regarding this.

The photo attached to the narration is of the Congress activities in Banda Aceh, when the Honorary Council for Medical Ethics (MKEK) read out the decision on Terawan’s proposed ‘dismissal’ as well as the inauguration of the new general chairman of IDI.

But, is it possible that this counter IDI discourse can be realized?

In response to this, the spokesperson for the IDI Executive Board for the dissemination of the results of the 31st IDI congress, Beni Satria, said that if there was more than one medical professional organization, it would make the provision of service standards and monitoring of doctor ethics unclear.

According to him, it is possible that the person concerned has problems with the code of ethics and health services in the IDI process, and then chooses to join another medical professional organization so that he can continue to practice.

“It just so happens that there is already a Constitutional Court decision No. 10 in PUU-XV/2017 issues related to professional organizations are not only translated as the Indonesian Doctors Association, but in the Medical Practice Law No. 29 2004 in article 1 number 12 it is clearly stated that professional organizations are doctors’ associations. Indonesia for doctors and the Indonesian Dentist Association for teeth, that’s the law,” he explained at a press conference Friday (1/4/2022).

“If there is a medical professional organization other than IDI, we are worried that there are two ethical standards for medical services, if it is possible for 3 professions other than IDI, then he will change his membership to B, or he will move to a doctor’s association which is C because there is a double standard that is harmed. society,” he continued.

If this happens, Dr. Beni is worried that the transfer of this organization will become a ‘shortcut’ for doctors whose practices are problematic, do not comply with standard service rules, and take the doctor’s oath. Dr. Beni emphasized that this could endanger the community.

“It is not the IDI professional organization that is being harmed, but the patient of the Indonesian people. He will move, be fired again from IDI, then move from IDI A to IDI B, he will continue to practice,” he concluded.
