Violent riots took place in Strasbourg on the night of Thursday to Friday June 30, particularly in the Neuhof district near the town hall. Some residents saw the rioters in action ransacking the small building.

The riots in France have continued every evening since the death of Nahel, killed by a police officer during a traffic check, after a refusal to comply, Tuesday, June 27. The violence is concentrated mainly in the Paris region around Nanterre, the scene of the tragedy, but also in other large cities. In Strasbourg, the damage is numerous. One of the main targets: the town hall of the district of Neuhof. Europe 1 went there to see the state of the building, alongside a cleaning lady used to the place.

About twenty people and cans of gasoline

A window was forced open on the street side, all the equipment inside was burned, electricity was cut off and computers were stolen. Here is the report made by the employee of the town hall when entering the building. “It’s very serious, it’s not good,” she laments. Europe 1 also met a resident living next to the town hall. The latter attended the scene, helpless. According to the Strasbourgeois, about twenty people were present equipped with cans of gasoline, crowbars to force the shutters of the small building.

“It was really breaking to break”, explains the inhabitant at the microphone of Europe 1 before adding “one would have thought that we were at war without being at war”. The town hall was not the only target of the riots. Bus shelters in the area were also looted and broken. Just like burnt-out vehicles and vans. The prefecture has not yet communicated on the number of arrests. Across the country, more than 400 people were arrested.
