Vintage Fashion Dominates 2024 Awards Season Red Carpets

The awards season is in full swing and one trend is already clearly emerging: everyone is doing vintage.

Awards red carpets are typically the place to showcase tailored couture and polished looks that were just seen on the runway. Recently, however, another trend has emerged: Hollywood’s A-league is all about vintage fashion. Whether it’s iconic 90s catwalk looks or historical jewelry that has endured for decades, numerous stars have proven how timeless true elegance can be. In 2024, vintage is more modern than ever.

These awards have already been presented

This year’s awards ceremonies kicked off with the Golden Globes and some notable vintage designs. Elle Fanning dazzled in a strapless cream dress with a large bow across the chest by Pierre Balmain from 1960. Carey Mulligan wore a classic mermaid dress by Schiaparelli from 1949 that looked surprisingly contemporary with its slit bodice and delicate ruffles. The evening’s most eye-catching jewelry pieces were also vintage: Dua Lipa wore a 1962 Tiffany & Co. necklace made of gold and platinum with yellow beryl, topaz quartz and diamonds.

At the Governor Awards, Olivia Rodrigo slipped into a black silk dress that comes from the 1997 Saint Laurent Couture collection, making her a mere six years older than the singer herself. Stars like Claire Danes – in a vintage Balmain dress – and Lizzy Caplan – in a Yohji Yamamoto dress from Spring 1999 – chose archive looks at the Emmys, Miley Cyrus chose a sparkling vintage Bob Mackie dress for her iconic “Flowers” performance at the Grammys.

A small sign for more conscious consumption in fashion

The stars’ conscious decision to pull gowns from the archives rather than the catwalk is not just a stylistic statement. On a competitive playing field like an awards ceremony, where there is a lot of pressure to constantly outdo yourself and others, the small and large vintage moments shine an important spotlight on issues surrounding consumption and sustainability. A successful look doesn’t have to be new. Especially when the biggest stars of our time have a whole treasure trove of iconic vintage ensembles at their disposal.

The best news is that awards season is still in full swing and we’ll be seeing a variety of vintage looks in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out!
