Villeneuve-St-Georges: the Turkish association does not want a mosque

It was one of the sparks that helped raise tension, the gold of the last explosive city council of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. The sale of a common property to the Federation of Turkish Cultural Centers, for the use of the Belle Etoile association from Villeneuvoise, had bristled with opposition, with some worried about the potential arrival of a new mosque. What the majority had denied at the time. The Federation, which has its headquarters in Paris, has the same address as a Turkish mosque.

“No, we are a cultural association, there is no question of a mosque at all,” replied Cemal Ozder, vice-president of the Belle Etoile association. “We have been in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges for 5-6 years. We bring together families from the community (Editor’s note: Turkish), we do administrative help, support for homework for children, and we also make our culture known to other cultures in the city, ”he continues. He and his president were present at the famous council, but the public did not have the opportunity to speak during the session. Belle Etoile also organizes big fairs, open to all, every year.

The land that the city agreed, during the council, to sell to the association for € 100,000, is located near the cemetery. Belle Star is currently installed in a downtown pavilion. Ultimately, the new premises should allow it to mount “new projects” and be less cramped. It affects some 200 people in the city.
