Vietnam will impose restrictions on community mobility or lockdown. The decision was taken because the country has just recorded a new daily record of COVID-19 cases.
As reported by Reuters, Sunday (18/7/2021) lockdown will be enforced in the 16 Southern Provinces of Vietnam for two weeks. The policy will take effect on Monday (19/7).
New daily cases on Saturday (17/7) hit 3,178, a record high. Meanwhile, for the third day in a row, Vietnam continued to record more than 3,000 new cases.
Three-quarters of confirmed cases are detected in the south, mainly in Ho Chi Minh City. Ministry of Health Vietnam said it had deployed at least 10,000 health workers to the worst-affected provinces COVID-19.
With the addition of these cases, Vietnam has recorded a total of 47,904 infections and 225 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
“The epidemic we are facing today is getting more complicated,” the government said, adding that the lockdown was in place to protect public health.
Previously, the country of 98 million people had managed to keep cases of the corona virus relatively low. At that time, various methods were carried out by the government, such as mass testing and strict contact tracing, border control and quarantine measures.
But after new variants of the infection emerged in recent weeks, health officials said they were concerned about the severe repercussions it might have. Daily cases also soared.
The spike in cases has sparked renewed pressure on the government to speed up inoculations and increase the supply of vaccines. So far, less than 300,000 people have been vaccinated.
Vietnam have received nearly 9 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The US Embassy in Hanoi said the US would provide an additional three million doses of Moderna vaccine for Vietnam through the international COVAX program.
