From December 28th, Christmas trees can be returned to the collection points of MA 48 throughout Vienna. On their last trip, they provide light and warmth in the Viennese living rooms.
The Christmas season officially ends with Candlemas on February 2nd, but most of Vienna’s Christmas trees start their last journey shortly after Christmas.
–
The disused Christmas trees are collected by MA 48 at 546 specially set up collection points and then recycled in the Pfaffenau waste incineration plant in Vienna-Simmering. Wien Energie uses the energy it generates to generate electricity and district heating for thousands of Viennese households – so the Christmas trees also provide light and warmth in Viennese living rooms in their “second life”.
–
In the previous year over 750 tonnes of Christmas trees were used to generate energy
Last year, more than 170,000 Christmas trees or over 750 tons were brought to the Christmas tree collection points in Vienna’s urban area. From here the trees start their way to the firewood.
–
MA 48 brings the decorated Christmas trees to Pfaffenau in Simmering, where the Christmas trees are thermally recycled together with the mixed household waste and thus given an additional benefit: Wien Energie uses the energy that is generated during combustion to produce electricity and heat.
–
Christmas trees supply households with electricity and district heating
Around 1,900 megawatt hours of energy can be extracted from this amount of Christmas trees. This means that around 1,000 households can be supplied with electricity and around 2,500 households with district heating for a month.

546 Christmas tree collection points in Vienna open until January 17, 2021
From December 28th until January 17th, 2021, the Viennese can use the usual service of the Christaum collection points of MA 48. In addition, the trees can be deposited on the Viennese manure pit all year round.
–
Christmas tree decorations have no place at the collection points, so all jewelry such as hooks, tinsel or glass balls should be removed. Some of these clean trees are also used as a feast for the Pinzgau goats at the Rautenweg landfill.
–
The information on the collection points is now available in Online city map of Vienna and in the 48er-App retrievable. More detailed questions are also answered on the dung phone on 01 – 546 48.
