Vienna State Opera Unveils Anselm Kiefer’s Artwork for 2023/2024 Season

This is already the twenty-sixth curtain created since 1998 by the Vienna State Opera and Organization museum in progress as a result of cooperation. It is a series of exhibitions Safety Curtain, in which the security curtain of the main stage of the Vienna State Opera is turned into a contemporary art exhibition space – a large-format painting (176 square meters) is attached to the curtain with magnets. This project allows contemporary art to enter a seemingly conservative environment like the opera house.

Anselm Kiefer as 2023/2024. The author of the artwork of the season was chosen by a jury consisting of the influential curators Daniel Birnbaum, Biche Kuriger and Hans Ulrich Obrist. In previous years, works by Matthew Barney, Richard Hamilton, Tasita Dean, Marija Lasnig, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Jeff Koons, Rosemarie Trockel, Francis West, Cy Twombly, Kerit Wynn-Evans, David Hockney have graced the curtain of the Vienna State Opera. Joan Jonas, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, John Baldessari, Martha Jungwirth, Sao Fei and more.

Anselma Kiefer’s painting was inspired by the novel of the Polish writer Stanislav Lem Solar. Anselm Kiefer’s constant fascination with cultural memory, identity and history has fueled the multi-layered subject matter of his works, which are enhanced by various historical, mythological and literary sources. These include references to mythology, alchemy, and Christian symbolism, as well as works by Walter von der Fogelweide, Paul Celan, Charles Baudelaire, Velimir Khlebnikov, and Ingeborg Bachmann.

The initiative of the Vienna State Opera to present contemporary art in the great hall has been noticed and appreciated worldwide. This example has also inspired the Latvian National Opera to start a similar project – in the spring, a large-format painting by Andras Eglīš is installed in the opera house, which is mounted in an iron curtain.
