Vienna-Rodaun: wild stay | DiePresse.com

After years in Australia and Chile, Mariella Gebhardt arrived in Vienna in the spring of 2015 with 25 bags. And she settled with her family in Liesing in the middle of the countryside.

After four years in Santiago de Chile and the birth of my first child, I longed for the support of the family, ”says Marielle Gebhart. “In Santiago people lived with barbed wire, electric fences and an alarm system. It was too uncomfortable for me with a small child ”. She returned to Vienna with her Chilean husband and their 1.5-year-old son and found a garden apartment in Rodaun, directly on the Liesingbach. “The apartment gave us the feeling of being close to nature, of living in a country house.” And since there was a campsite here, travelers keep asking for it. “As a globetrotter, I think it’s great that this spirit of adventure and wanderlust was experienced here years ago.”

The 122 sqm three-room apartment is on the ground floor and overlooks a terrace in the 1200 sqm garden. The living room lets a lot of nature into the living room with glass surfaces: “In spring we watch almost every day how the squirrels play tag.” In three minutes Gebhardt is in the forest – before it was the sea and the waves, now it is the forest and the rustle of the leaves and the brook that found them. “They are both beautiful natural elements that have a positive influence on us humans”, she is convinced her. In Australia in particular, she has become aware of how much she needs nature for her personal well-being. “Just like I used to surf before work, here I go to the forest.” Or in the garden, to the sound of birds singing under the old trees.

There is a large wooden table for family gatherings on the terrace, behind a reed wall is a fire pit with log seating and hand made pallet furniture. For the now two boys there is a trampoline, a suspended swing, a self-built tree house and a soccer goal. Lots of fun, lots of work: “Even though I like being in the garden because it’s my ‘stress buster’. In autumn, when the leaves fall, we need a few days to get rid of them all. “

Maritime elements

The fire element has a special meaning for Gebhardt. “It brings so much warmth and liveliness. Our children started lighting the fire themselves at an early age, in the summer in front of the fireplace and in the winter in front of the fireplace. This is the best nature television, everyone has their own film ”. The passion for the sea and surfing is also felt in every room: surfboards, photos or slogans serve as wall decorations. The shades of blue and turquoise bring a maritime atmosphere to the house. “One could almost believe that we live by the sea. This is surely a great dormant desire. ” She made most of the shabby retro-style furniture herself. “I like to create something new from old things. If I find drawers or something similar on the side of the road, they just make a shelf out of it. ” The modular sofa in the living room with different elements and shapes has different functions: bouncy castle, den, slide or extra bed.

The living room is a place of well-being made of colors, shapes and smells. Natural elements and materials are especially important to her: “If you don’t feel comfortable at home, you can’t even find inner peace.” The only drawback: “The neighbors above us have a good view of the garden. South Americans especially love to party, it’s an elixir of life, people laugh, talk loudly and play. is not always so pleasant for the neighbors “.
Working from home has always been part of Gebhardt’s job. “I still find it difficult to ignore the house and to-dos and focus on work.” Sometimes he grabs his camper and immerses himself in nature. “In the” van office “I can’t be distracted by anything,” he smiles at him. Her apartment on her wheels, called “Ella’s Camper”, can also be rented for short or long periods. “With the rental I want to give people more proximity to nature and allow them to feel free and light.”

To the place, to the person

“Radune” was first mentioned around 1170 and since 1946 the city is part of the 23rd district of Vienna, Liesing. The southernmost district between the romantic village, numerous new buildings, redeveloped Liesingbach and the industry is today, depending on the location, a sought-after residential area on the edge of the city of Vienna. New apartments cost an average of 6239 euros / m2, used ones 5118 euros / m2.

Mariella Gebhardt studied in Australia, lived in Chile and works as a health consultant in Vienna.
