On Sunday there was a lot of work to restore the jetty in Meerzorg, as can be seen in the video below. It concerns the crossing point between Commewijne and Paramaribo, which was in a deplorable state. The jetty is expected to be completed on Monday.
There are a number of scaffolding in various locations, which are in a deplorable condition. This jetty has priority, because hundreds of passengers use it on a daily basis. The students will also make the crossing again soon.
The Ministry of Public Works (OW) in Suriname takes action The scaffolding partly with resources from our own management and material made available by sponsors from the district.
According to OW minister Riad Nurmohamed, next to the jetty that is being repaired, a concrete jetty is under construction. However, construction has been halted, due to the fact that the previous Surinamese government has failed to fulfill its payment obligation. According to the minister, this is a sky-high payment arrears in this case.
The minister guarantees that he will endeavor to complete this project before 2022. “A concrete jetty will also be set up on the Paramaribo side” he said.
