At one time, the best screwdrivers could be used for driving – riders had to be able to file, saw, turn, mill and weld, and the parts were not available at all. At that time, Teodors Liepa built a go-kart, the frame of which weighed only 27 kilograms, but the engines were jackets and small aircraft tires were used for go-karts.
Juris Majors was present at the first go-kart test in 1960 and built his first ride at that time. Agris Staņēvičs rode karting from 1966 to 1972, for the first year he only drove his vehicle until he was driving and already in 1968 became the USSR youth champion.
Comparing the beginnings of go-karting with modern sports, Vladislav Schlegelmilh believes that the difference is like day to night. Hugo Jurševskis, who raised the karting bar at the international level during the Soviet era, believes that karting is still moving forward today, but the competition is not so great anymore.
Erik Gasparovich, comparing pioneer gloves, helmets and overalls with modern equipment, shows why it is necessary to think about sustainable things in motorsport as well.
