The Bronx district in New York (United States) recently experienced heavy rain accompanied by strong gusts of wind. These weather conditions would be the cause of an accident as surprising as spectacular on the afternoon of Monday July 18, 2022. A parked van was engulfed by a huge cavity that suddenly appeared in the middle of a street, recount The New York Times.

The collapse of the road, whose images were relayed by the mayor Eric Adams on Twitter, did not cause any victims but material damage is to be deplored.
The phenomenon notably damaged a water pipe, depriving 70 households of drinking water. However, the problem had been solved the next morning for about fifty families.

A gaping hole
The huge hole that has formed is nearly 18m long and 4.5m wide. The van that fell into the cavity is completely invisible from the street, as the hole is more than 6m deep. Edward Timbers, spokesman for the New York City Environmental Protection Department, spoke of the likely effects of the weather while adding that an investigation into the exact causes of the incident was underway.
