1,245 new cases of Covid-19 contamination were confirmed in Morocco in 24 hours, bringing to 44,803 cases the total number of people tested positive for the new coronavirus, announced the Ministry of Health, this Tuesday, August 18 at 6 p.m.

The number of active patients has increased considerably in recent days. It now stands at 13,087.

The Ministry of Health has identified 33 deaths and 1,061 healings in 24 hours, bringing the official toll to 714 deaths and 31,002 remissions since the start of the epidemic in Morocco on March 2, 2020.

The total number of cases tested negative for Covid-19 after the results of laboratory analyzes amounts to 1,603,925, which brings the overall number of screening tests carried out in Morocco, since 1is March 2020, at 1.648.728.

In the Maghreb, a leaden cloud is falling on Algeria where the authorities do not communicate the number of screening tests, which raises fears that the number of contaminations is much higher than the official figures. 419 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 12 deaths have been recorded during the last 24 hours in Algeria, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 39,444 and that of deaths to 1,391.

In Tunisia, 78 new cases, 2 deaths and 4 recoveries have been recorded over the past 24 hours. The number of confirmed cases stands at 2,185. The number of deaths caused by Covid-19 stands at 56, while 1,362 individuals have fully recovered.

In Mauritania, during the last 24 hours, 61 new cases of Covid-19, zero deaths and 33 new healings have been recorded. In total, the country has, since the appearance of the first case of coronavirus, 6,762 cases, including 6,018 recoveries and 157 deaths.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 774,832 people worldwide since the WHO office in China reported the onset of the disease at the end of December, according to a report established by AFP from official sources Tuesday at 11:00 GMT.

This number of cases diagnosed, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections. Some countries only test severe cases, others prioritize testing for tracing, and many poor countries have limited testing capacity.

On Monday, 4,233 new deaths and 220,645 new cases were recorded worldwide. The countries that recorded the most new deaths in their latest reports are India with 876 new deaths, Brazil (684) and the United States (434).

The United States is the most affected country in terms of both deaths and cases, with 170,497 deaths for 5,438,325 cases, according to the Johns Hopkins University count. At least 1,865,580 people have been declared cured.

After the United States, the countries most affected are Brazil with 108,536 deaths for 3,359,570 cases, Mexico with 57,023 deaths (525,733 cases), India with 51,797 deaths (2,702,742 cases), and the United Kingdom United with 41,369 deaths (319,197 cases).

Among the hardest hit countries, Belgium is the one that deplores the highest number of deaths in relation to its population, with 86 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Next come Peru (80), Spain (61), the United Kingdom (61), and Italy (59).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao) has officially counted a total of 84,871 cases (22 new between Monday and Tuesday), including 4,634 deaths (zero new), and 79,642 recoveries.

Latin America and the Caribbean had a total of 243,470 deaths for 6,225,679 cases on Tuesday at 11 a.m. GMT, Europe 210,978 deaths (3,562,495 cases), the United States and Canada 179,562 deaths (5,560,567 cases), the Asia 81,738 deaths (4,080,157 cases), the Middle East 32,723 deaths (1,352,244 cases), Africa 25,890 deaths (1,129,613 cases), and Oceania 471 deaths (26,072 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to corrections made by the authorities or late releases of data, the 24 hour increase figures may not exactly match those published the day before.
