Are women now allowed to study in Afghanistan, at universities? According to an official Taliban representative – yes. The Taliban’s new minister for higher education said there would be firm rules: classes would be gender segregated and strictly Islamic clothing would have to be worn. He did not say whether it meant headscarves or an obligatory face covering. The minister, Abdul Baqi Hakkani, added that female students should be taught by women whenever possible. Women’s education is one of the key issues facing the Taliban. They are trying to convince the public that they have changed since their fundamentalist rule in the 1990s. Last week, pictures of classrooms with a curtain between male and female students became public. Students at this university in Kabul criticized the separation: O-Ton: “We call on the Taliban not to be so strict and not to impose extremist Islam on the people, but to adhere to the rules of the previous government.” O-Ton: “Do not create problems and challenges in the field of education so that we can continue our education and employment as in the past.” Since the Taliban came to power, women have demonstrated time and again: They demand equal access for women to jobs, participation in politics and education. A video from early September showed some women being shot at with tear gas and local media reported that some women had been beaten and ill-treated. Education Minister Hakkani told reporters on Sunday that all subjects taught at universities will be reviewed in the coming months.
