VIDEO ⟩ The tragic accident in Kaunas

As explained by the Lithuanian police, the accident happened on Saturday, February 18, around 22.35 on the 99th kilometer of the Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipeda highway. A “Mercedes-Benz” car, while moving in the opposite lane, caused a head-on collision with BMW and “Skoda” cars. Two people died – drivers of “Mercedes” and BMW, while two passengers of “Skoda” were hospitalized.

The “tv3.lt” portal reports that the 42-year-old businessman Tomas Rauba was sitting at the wheel of the “Mercedes”. The businessman had previously been punished several times for driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition, he did not have a driver’s license during the fatal trip.

After the accident, many people expressed on social networks that even before the accident they saw that Rauba was driving the “Mercedes” inappropriately, but the police did not receive any report about him.

Investigators are currently looking into two versions of what happened. In the first version, it is assumed that Rauba was driving under the influence of alcohol, and in the second, there was an error in the navigation system, as a result of which he drove in the wrong lane. For now, we have to wait and see what the alcohol tests reveal.

As reported, Rauba and the driver of the BMW born in 1961 died in the tragic accident, whose vehicle collided head-on with the Mercedes driver.

In connection with the accident, a pre-trial investigation has been started according to Article 281 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania.
