TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Spain reports second case of death from disease monkey pox or monkeypox on Saturday, July 30, 2022. The day before that one patient died, which is believed to be the first death related to this outbreak in Europe.
“Among the 3,750 patients, 120 were hospitalized and two died,” Spain’s health ministry said in a report, without specifying the date of the second victim’s death.
Authorities only said the victims were two young men. Research is underway to gather more epidemiological information on both cases.
According to the health ministry’s emergency coordination and alert center, 4,298 people in Spain have been infected. The high number of monkeypox cases in Indonesia Spanishmaking this country one of the hardest hit in the world.
Brazil also previously reported its first monkeypox-related death on Friday. Brazil’s Ministry of Health said the victim was a 41-year-old patient who died of a co-morbid condition called lymphoma, which reduces his immunity. The Pan American Health Organization reported Brazil had 978 confirmed cases of monkeypox as of Friday.
Cases of death were previously confined to Africa where the virus is endemic and was first detected in 1970. The World Health Organization or WHO has declared the outbreak a global health emergency. Most of the infections have been in Europe, where 70 percent of new cases have been detected since early May, according to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Previously, of the five deaths from the monkeypox virus, all of them came from Africa.
