Vespa, the specimen that costs like a Ferrari – Mondo Moto

It is difficult to come across a motorcycle or a scooter of such high value that it is capable of surpassing that of a Ferrari or any other prestigious supercar. Yet there are some highly prized lots, the price of which can reach hundreds of thousands of euros. This is the case with the Vespa, the iconic Piaggio two-wheeler that this year celebrates 75 years of history and that over the last few years has met with ever-increasing success among collectors.

A success that culminated in the first series Vespa, the 1946 edition which was made entirely by hand. A real collector’s item, almost impossible to find. The artisanal production of this Vespa made it possible to bring to light a first batch of only 60 specimens (the so-called “zero” series) all made by hand with a lot of sheet metal cutting performed without the help of any automated machinery. The steel plates were beaten on wooden jigs and welded one by one. The first Vespa it was not equipped with a kickstand or even a real suspension system. A totally handcrafted creation made even more unique by the fact that the remaining specimens are practically unobtainable, with only three specimens known to exist. A two-wheeler of this kind therefore has a very high valuation, just think that at the last auction in which a first series Vespa was sold (March 2017), the final price was 182,499 euros. A value equivalent to that of a supercar.
