Very secure iPhone backup only on computers

Apple offers encrypted iPhone backups on its servers, but then also has a key to the data itself. Is that different?

Apple Backup

Berlin (dpa / tmn) – A strong end-to-end encryption, for which only you have the key yourself: This is usually what you want for your data. If you do not want to move away from this security requirement when it comes to backing up your iPhone, you have to create it locally on your computer.

Because on the Apple servers (iCloud) you can’t take the encryption into your own hands, you have to leave it to Apple.

The iPhone backup on Apple computers works
as follows: On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15, the Finder must be opened. And on a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier and on Windows PCs, iTunes is opened. Then you search for the device in question using the Finder or iTunes.

Once you have found the iPhone to be backed up, go to “Backups” under “General”, activate “Create a backup of all your iPhone’s data on this Mac / PC”, tick “Encrypt local backup” and then insert strong password.

However, one must not forget to store this password in a safe place. If there is a loss, there is no way to restore the backup.
