The Contemporary Auctions of Christie’s were electric, this July 19! The figurehead of pop art, Andy Warhol, particularly shone: two of his paintings representing the rock icon, Mick Jagger, are gone for $150,000 and $200,000 respectively. These two works represent the face of the singer on which pastel colors are affixed, not following the lines of his face, but being as if torn and then glued randomly.

Damien Hirst also hit the jackpot: one of the paintings from his Cherry Blossoms series, recently exhibited at the Fondation Cartier, was sold for $176,000. Another pop artist was in the spotlight: of them toiles de Keith Haring in bright colors, filled with its characteristic little characters, were bought for 50,000 dollars. A price that may seem low, but exceeds the estimates that the two paintings had received! Same case for a work by David Hockney representing a cliff in surreal colors, sold for 25,000 dollars. A sculpture by Claes Oldenburg, representing a cocktail glass about to overturn, had only been estimated at 7,000 dollars, but finally found a buyer for 30,000 dollars! Roy LichtensteinGerhard RichterYayoi Kusama Still other contemporary art pundits were present at this memorable sale, portraying contemporary art that is resolutely pop, joyful and bursting with color.
