On Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had a longer meeting with his Chinese colleague, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The conversation was described by a US official as “extremely straightforward” and mainly concerned Taiwan. The situation is currently very tense between Taiwan and the Chinese authoritieswhich considers Taiwan to be part of its territory.
– Takes people out of bed
– Dangerous signs
Reports from night to Saturday Reuters that the Chinese foreign minister has said that the United States is trying to undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity over Taiwan and that the United States is sending “very wrong and dangerous signals”.
Yi further said that the more Taiwan works for its independence, the less likely a peaceful solution will be.
The Chinese authorities are working towards full reunification with Taiwan and have made no secret of their willingness to use force if reunification cannot take place peacefully.
Blinken called on China to work for peace and stability with Taiwan, arguing that it is critical to regional and global security.
“A Chinese principle”
China and Taiwan have been separated since 1949, when the Communists won the Chinese civil war and seized power on the mainland. The defeated nationalists sought refuge on the island of Taiwan.
Officially, the Americans are ambiguous for strategic reasons as to whether they want to defend Taiwan, but they are required by law to help Taiwan with equipment in order to defend themselves. That is why the US State Department announced in early September that it will give Taiwan a $ 1.1 billion worth of weapons package.
