Max Verstappen realizes that his chances of a possible world title have become a lot smaller because of his dropout in the first Grand Prix of the Formula 1 season. The Dutchman’s car had an electronic problem in Austria, which meant that the Limburger scored zero points.
The 22-year-old Verstappen could only become the youngest ever world champion in Formula 1 this year. That record is now in the name of Sebastian Vettel, but it is not a goal for the Red Bull Racing driver.
“If that happens, it will happen,” said Verstappen bi Monday eveningj Sport and talk from the Austrian ServusTV. “But after last weekend it will be a lot harder to realize. Nothing is over yet, but then we have to score a lot of points next weekend.”
In the battle for the world title, Verstappen is 25 points behind Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, who won the race in Austria. Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton finished fourth last Sunday and has twelve points.
Verstappen not dissatisfied with the car
Despite the failure in Austria, Verstappen is not dissatisfied with his car. “It was not bad, but we want to improve it. During the race I also drove on other, harder tires and it went better. For next weekend, again here in Austria, we want to find some time.”
Due to the corona crisis, no fans were present on the Red Bull Ring. Verstappen noticed during the race that it was a difference with the previous Grands Prix. “During a race, especially in the beginning, you are very concentrated and you don’t have time to pay attention to the fans, but as the race progresses you look at it. It is different and unfortunate.”
Verstappen will soon have a second chance in Austria, because the next GP starts next Sunday at 3.10 p.m. The first free practice is scheduled for Friday from 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
