Verstappen won the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix after starting from 10th place – F1sport.cz

Qualification for the Hungarian Grand Prix surprisingly George Russell won. Carlos Sainz started from the front row next to him. The second row belonged to Leclerc and Norris, third to Ocon and Alonso, fourth to Hamilton and Bottas and fifth to Ricciardo and Verstappen.

Hamilton had a problem with DRS in qualifying, while Verstappen reported a loss of power. Sergio Pérez only started from 11th place.

Race

The weather was on edge throughout the race. Raindrops also appeared, but no significant precipitation came.

Russell, Norris, Ricciardo, Verstappen, Pérez, Stroll, Cunoda, Albon, Vettel and Gasly started on soft, the rest on medium tyres.

Last year there was a mass collision after the start. This year, the start was also not without contacts. Albon had contact with Vettel and had to pit. Magnussen also damaged his front wing, seeing the black flag with an orange wheel. A virtual safety car was briefly announced due to the debris.

At the top, the order did not change. Russell retained first place. Behind him were the two Ferrari drivers. Hamilton was fifth after the start, Pérez briefly got ahead of Verstappen, who quickly regained the position.

Behind Russell and the Ferrari drivers were Norris, Hamilton, Ocon, Alonso and Verstappen.

The championship leader got ahead of the erring Alonso and then also ahead of Ocon in the fifth lap. On lap 12, Hamilton got ahead of Norris, who was soon overtaken by Verstappen as well. Norris struggled on the soft tires and had to pit.

Russell maintained his lead in the early laps, but after 16 laps the Ferrari drivers caught up with him. However, there was no fight, Russell headed to the pits, where Verstappen also entered at the same time.

Sainz built a lap later. Hamilton started only after 19 laps and Leclerc after 22. The Monaco man returned to the track behind Russell but before Sainz. Subsequently, he took advantage of the good speed and fresher tires and in the 31st lap took the lead of the race in the first corner after a beautiful maneuver on the brakes.

The Alpine riders also built later and fought each other after the stops. Daniel Ricciardo took advantage of this and overtook both of them. However, the Australian later spoiled the race when he sent Lance Stroll into the clock, for which he received a five-second penalty.

Leclerc built up a lead at the front. But the second stops came. Verstappen was among the first to build from the top. He got ahead of Russell and after Leclerc’s stop, he was not far from the Monaco. The Ferrari driver put on hard tires, Verstappen on medium and after a while he got in front of him. But Verstappen was not in the lead for long. He spun and fell behind Leclerc. However, the advantage of the softer tires remained with him, so after a while he got back in front of the Ferrari driver.

Later, Russell also got ahead of Leclerc. The Monaco man headed to the pits again and put on the soft tyres. For Leclerc, it meant falling to sixth position.

Sainz also had soft tires in the last stint, but Hamilton had significantly more on the same set. The Briton got ahead of Sainz and subsequently ahead of teammate George Russell.

At the end of the race, we saw the virtual safety car for the second time. This time it was Valtteri Bottas who lost power and stopped at the track.

After starting from tenth place, Max Verstappen cruised to another victory and extended his lead at the top of the championship. Hamilton and Russell also reached the podium.
