Verstappen is disappointed after strong Friday: “Studded tires would have been better”

After the second session, Max Verstappen topped the scoreboard just like in the morning. With a 1.28.330 he was the fastest man of the day and had a lead of 0.4 seconds over Charles Leclerc. The Mercedes duo followed more than half a second behind.

In the morning there was hardly any grip on Istanbul Park, in the afternoon it was already a bit better. Yet the drivers were still more than three seconds slower than the fastest time in 2011. Despite the slippery track, it was a positive day, Verstappen also notes.

“Even during the second free practice we still had very little grip and that’s a shame”, he sighs immediately after the second practice session. Sky Sport Italy. “Still, it was a positive day for us. The Red Bull car seems to be good, so that’s good news for us.”

“The track was slightly better in the second session,” the Red Bull driver continues. “But it couldn’t be any worse, because it really was an ice rink! During the second practice session it still seemed like we were on ice. Maybe we would have driven better with studded tires”, the Dutchman laughs.

“The track was even smoother than in Portimao and we are at least five seconds slower than we think we can be. But of course that applies to everyone,” said Verstappen.

2020 has turned out to be a lost year for Red Bull. Can the team turn the tide in 2021 together with Max Verstappen? All this and more in the latest Formula 1 podcast from RacingNews365, with Tom Coronel, Ruud Dimmers and Thomas van Groningen.
