Versatility bonus: definition

The versatility bonus is a salary supplement paid to an employee to reward their versatility. An employer is not obliged to pay this bonus to a versatile employee. The versatility of an employee is characterized by the fact that an employee is able to occupy different workstations given their skills and their mastery of different techniques. A versatile employee thus designates an employee able to carry out different tasks.

A versatile employee is therefore an asset for an employer, the versatility bonus is thus paid to him to reward this advantage. The versatility bonus can be granted in both the public and private sectors.

Versatility bonus: conditions

The law does not require employers to pay a versatility bonus to a versatile employee. However, this premium may be imposed by:

  • the collective agreement or collective agreement applicable within the company,
  • the work contract,
  • l’usage.

To find out whether the premium is mandatory and what the terms of payment are, it is necessary to check these documents. For example, the collective agreement for sugar factories, sugar refineries-distilleries and sugar refineries provides that a versatility bonus is granted when an employee demonstrates organizational versatility, i.e. he is assigned in a position that combines different activities. Or when an employee occupies different positions.

A versatility bonus is paid when the hierarchy validates that an employee meets one of these two versatility criteria.

Calculation of the versatility bonus

The method of calculating the versatility bonus is provided for by the collective agreement, the collective agreement, the employment contract or even usage. It is therefore advisable to refer to these documents to find out the amount of the versatility bonus to be paid to an employee. The versatility bonus can:

  • be a fixed annual, quarterly or monthly amount;
  • be a percentage of the employee’s remuneration;
  • correspond to a calculation taking into account a number of versatility points acquired by an employee, the value of this point and the time the employee is present.

Unless otherwise agreed, the versatility bonus is calculated in proportion to the employee’s working time. For example, the collective agreement for sugar factories, sugar factories-distilleries and sugar refineries provides that the versatility bonus is equal to 150 euros in the first year and 300 euros in subsequent years.

Another example, a collective agreement signed in a fishmonger’s company provides that each employee can acquire versatility points which are fixed for each task defined in a skill matrix. The versatility bonus is then calculated according to the following formula: Number of versatility points x Point value 0.50 euros gross x Time spent.
