Venezuela: Head of the government of Caracas Darío Vivas dies of coronavirus

To the 70 years the head of the government of Caracas (Venezuela) died, Darío Vivas, due to the coronavirus. The Chavista leader was diagnosed with Covid-19 since last June 19 and spent about a month hospitalized for coronavirus.

The news was confirmed by members of the government of Nicolás Maduro, including the attorney general Tarek William Saab, who used his Twitter account to refer to the death of Vivas.

“It is with deep regret that we receive the unfortunate news of the death of our good friend Darío Vivas: a full-fledged revolutionary with whom we have shared, since the 1980s, in the streets of Caracas, courageous struggles in defense of the people and the homeland.”

For her part, the vice president, Delcy Rodriguezhe wrote too. “He died in combat (…), taking care of the health and life of all of us in this tough battle against the pandemic.”

Alive, it is not the only official authority that has been diagnosed with coronavirus: God given hair (head of the National Constituent Assembly) and Jorge Rodriguez (Minister of Communication), among others. They are some of those close to Maduro who have been infected.

Venezuela registers at least 29,088 confirmed cases of coronavirus and the death toll is close to 247. Although experts and members of the Venezuelan opposition consider that the numbers should be much higher.

The Latin American country faces a political, social and economic crisis that worries the international community and human rights defense organizations throughout the world.
