Diets that rely on fruits and vegetables have always been linked to good health and lower rates of disease, but some researchers have found that vegetarians and plant diets have a bad effect on mental health.

According to a recent study, published by the Journal of Food Science (Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition), the research team stated that high rates of mental and mental illness in the last two decades have been linked to the increasing number of people resorting to vegetarian diets.

According to the American “Medical Daily” website, avoiding meat has a negative effect on mental health, as researchers found that those who adopt meat-free diets are more likely to suffer from depression, stress and self-destructive actions, compared to those who eat meat, according to the author of the study, Urska Dubersk. Associate Professor, Southern Indiana University.

“The rest of the research team and I were surprised by the continuous link between avoiding eating meat and increasing the incidence of mental illness,” Dubersk says, explaining that the results of the study do not support avoiding meat for mental health.

The study relied on the data of 18 previous studies, which included 149 thousand and 559 meat eaters and 8 thousand and 584 who follow a vegetarian system in Europe, Asia and North America, as each study focused on the effect of diet change on mental health and quality of life.

The results of 11 studies showed that vegetarians enjoy less mental health quality than carnivores, while 3 other studies showed positive results for vegetarian diet.

The researchers have not yet determined a reason for carnivores to have good mental health compared to other vegetarians.

They indicated their willingness to conduct future research to determine if the meat contained nutrients that could not be obtained from vegetables and fruits.
