VDL Groep is back ‘almost fully’ in operation a month after cyber attack – Computer – News

The production activities of car manufacturer VDL Groep have been resumed after a cyber attack that took place at the beginning of October. The Eindhoven consortium reports that its 105 work locations are ‘almost fully’ in operation again. The company was able to restore backups to its systems.

Using ‘clean data’ from the secured backups, the company erases in their own words to create safe working environments and all 105 VDL locations were able to gradually resume their production activities. “Due to adequate action by our employees, the damage was limited to a maximum of one day’s loss of data,” according to the Eindhoven consortium.

The group is currently conducting investigations into ‘the background to and the consequences of the cyber attack on VDL Groep’s systems’. According to the company, these are not yet fully completed. The costs of the cyber attack will be determined in the first quarter of 2022. Director Willem van der Leegte writes that the company has reported the cyber attack to the police and the Dutch Data Protection Authority.

The cyber attack was carried out on Wednesday, October 6. signaled during monitoring of the VDL networks. Subsequently, the IT systems of the consortium were disconnected and the networks of the 105 VDL locations were closed off as a precaution. The ‘back-up environments’ of the VDL Groep were also secured in good time, the company reported on Monday.

Few concrete details are known about the cyber attack. For example, the company does not report whether it was a ransomware infection. “In order not to increase future attempts at cyber attacks, no further information is provided regarding the recent hack at VDL Groep,” the company reports. In its own words, VDL Groep will also not provide information about ‘the current and future IT architecture’ of the consortium.
