Vassilis Papakonstantinou was invited to the show “Moments” by Manos Niflis, revealing unknown moments of his life.
In fact, he almost “ate” a door at his own concert in Ioannina when the security guard didn’t recognize him. The singer was trying to explain who he was but the guard insisted that “he is instructed personally by Mr. Papakonstantinou not to let anyone pass».
Speaking about the first money he made from singing, Vassilis Papakonstantinou confided that while he was singing foreign rock music he was not paid. This changed when he collaborated with Hadjidakis and Theodorakis.
«We played with the band in shops and night clubs but there was no money there. The first money came when I quit rock foreign music. They came from the hearings of Theodorakis, Hadzidakis, Savvopoulos of Spanos. My roots were leftist and new wave seemed much more familiar to me. I could express myself in my language because I used to sing Peloponnesian English».
Nice talk but don’t shout so much
While singing in the bars of Plaka, they told him to speak well but not to shout so much. The last time he sang his songs in a boite was in “Xasteria” which was closed by Huda in 1967
«I went down to Plaka, I went to the studio of Yannis Argyris, whom I also consider to be the first teacher. I sang to him and he said: “It’s nice, but don’t shout so much”, because I “had it”. I also sang in a bar called “Xasteria”, and it was closed by the Junta in 1967.
Then I became a soldier and when I was dismissed I couldn’t sing Theodorakis. I had a friend from the army and he lived in Germany. And he says to me, “Let’s go outside, Vassilis.” What are you going to do over here?” We didn’t have money to buy tickets and I thought it would be good to go to a shop where I would also get money».
