This is the hotel where Princess Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed spent their last meal and night together before the tragic car accident, where both were killed on 31 August 1997.
Luxury area
Place Vendôme, where the Ritz is located, is owned by Dodi Al Fayed’s father, Mohamed Al Fayed. The square is considered the most luxurious in Paris with all its jewelery shops, banks and expensive private apartments. The French Ministry of Justice and two mansions, owned by the Sultan of Brunei, are among the adjoining buildings.
Princess Diana is far from the only celebrity who has shone over the Ritz over the years. It was built in 1898 and is one of seven palace hotels in Paris. It has recently undergone a refurbishment worth two billion kroner, but the historic buzz is still in the walls.
Hemingway’s favorite
The Ritz was the American hotel legend Ernest Hemingway’s favorite hotel, and of course he got the hotel’s famous bar – The Hemingway Bar – named after him. Here he spent many long evenings during World War II. The German Air Force established its headquarters at the Ritz. Legend has it that Hemingway liberated the bar when the Nazis withdrew from Paris in 1945 – and then ordered champagne for everyone.

Hemingway is also said to have on one occasion thrown a picture of his wife into a Ritz toilet after he learned that she wanted a divorce. Then he is said to have shot both the picture and the toilet to pieces with his pistol.
Cocos gigantsuite
The French designer Coco Chanel lived at the Ritz for 35 years, in a 160 square meter suite consisting of two bedrooms, a living room decorated with Chinese furniture, baroque mirrors and oversized quilted sofas.
Another guest who enjoys a slightly outrageous decor at the Ritz is Sir Elton John (75). His two-room suite is reportedly decorated in cream and strawberry pink with pink carpets and attic windows.
The famous French author, Marcel Proust, wrote parts of the Remembrance of Things Past at the Ritz. He was so fond of the hotel that while lying dying, Proust allegedly sent his driver, Odilon, to the hotel to pick up a bottle of his favorite beer – which was always kept on ice for him. He is said to have taken one last sip of the beer before he died – and thanked loyal Odilon for the last friendly gesture.

Duchess at the bar
Wallis Simpson, also known as the Duchess of Windsor, often showed up for lunch without her husband, the Duke of Windsor, who had not yet recovered from last night’s festivities.
– I married David in good and bad days – but not for lunch, she could tell the bartender at the Ritz.
King’s drink
King Alfonso of Spain, another regular at the bar, was automatically served his special drink, a liter of Dom Perignon champagne with cognac and a dozen strawberries – a suitable drink menu for the weekend’s famous bridal couple and guests?
At least everything should be ready for a wonderful and unforgettable weekend. The Ritz rooms can offer most things. The suites have a separate living room, and some have a private terrace with garden views. The upgraded themed suites overlook the Place Vendôme.
The hotel has a bistro, two upscale restaurants, several lounges and two bars, one with the aforementioned Hemingway theme. Other facilities include an elegant indoor pool, a fitness room and an elegant spa with Chanel beauty treatments.
