Van Gaal’s Debate with Journalists over Chelsea’s Defensive Football

Trainer Dutch Louis van Gaal involved in a debate with journalists about the style of play The Orange. Van Gaal accused of wanting to use defensive football Chelsea.

Louis van Gaal reappointed as coach Dutch national team on 4 August replaced Frank de Boer. This is Van Gaal’s third time in charge of the Dutch national team.

Two games have been passed by the Netherlands so far in the third period with Louis van Gaal. The result was a 1-1 draw against Norway and a 4-0 win over Montenegro.

At a press conference on Monday (6/9/2021), Van Gaal had a heated argument with Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen. Driessen considers the former coach of Ajax, Barcelona and Manchester United it wants to implement a football that tends to defend like Chelsea.

Van Gaal does not agree that Chelsea’s style of play is labeled defensive. According to him, the five-defence pattern that is currently being used by top European clubs, including Chelsea, actually offers an abundance of attack options.

“Look at the results, look at Italy… European champions. They are now level twice, lo. It’s not easy at all. Defensive football has returned and there is a welcome for it,” said Van Gaal referring to Italy’s attacking style of play with Roberto Mancini, as quoted Metro.

“But the one who welcomes you. You also want to play like Chelsea and Liverpool,” said Driessen.

“Is that defensive football, in your eyes?” replied Van Gaal.

“That’s what Chelsea are doing now,” said Driessen again.

Van Gaal hit back with a scathing comment, while heaping praise on the Manager Chelsea Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel was successful in bringing The Blues entered and finished in the top four of the Premier League, also won the Champions League defeating Manchester City who is often considered a representation of attacking football.

“Not at all, Valentijn. You don’t understand at all. Sorry I have to say it, but you’re just a journalist. You want to implement your vision, but you don’t have a vision in football,” said Van Gaal.

“You have vision for the paper, fantastic. You attract attention and so on. But with a 5-3-2 or 5-2-3 you can attack really well.”

“Chelsea show it all the time, with different formations. And I take my hat off to Tuchel, because he only came in the middle of last season.”
