Van drives into Amsterdam canal, nine people rescued

A van hit the water this afternoon in the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam. The nine occupants were able to get to safety with the help of a bystander. Two people were slightly injured.

The incident occurred just after 12 noon this afternoon. A police spokesperson said: AT5 that the van probably fell into the water while parking.

Before the fire brigade arrived, all occupants were rescued from the water. A bystander jumped into the water and managed to open one of the doors as the van slowly disappeared underwater. At the same time, a number of occupants on the other side were also able to exit the van and swim to shore.
