Van Dijk supports FC Groningen with the purchase of season tickets, Wijnaldum follows example | NOW

Virgil van Dijk has supported his former employer FC Groningen on Saturday by buying four season tickets. Georginio Wijnaldum followed the example of his teammate at Liverpool and purchased four season tickets at Sparta.

The two players raffle the cards among fans of the Eredivisie clubs, who themselves are unable to purchase season tickets. FC Barcelona striker Luis Suárez, who played for Groningen in the 2006/2007 season, also announced to support the ‘Pride of the North’.

The initiative to buy season tickets was set up by former FC Groningen striker Erik Nevland. The now 42-year-old Norwegian bought two season tickets for Groningen on Friday and gave this away to a charity.

Atalanta defender Hans Hateboer, who made his debut in professional football at FC Groningen in 2014, is also willing to support his former employer. The three-time international of Orange announced to buy three season tickets.

FC Groningen had to take tough measures earlier this week. To survive the corona crisis, the club had to fire eleven employees.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Eredivisie season cannot be completed. The clubs therefore miss out on a lot of income. That can add up to tens of millions of euros if you also have to play behind closed doors for the entire next season.
