Valve Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Steam Service with Discount Event and Reflection on Platform’s History

Valve released a special page on the 12th to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Steam service. Steam was officially launched on September 12, 2003. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Steam service, Valve started a discount event by introducing the most popular games every year.

Steam was first announced at the 2002 Game Developers Conference (GDC). At the time, it was used to easily provide Valve games. Since then, it has become a platform for all game developers to reach more players.

The first game that Valve introduced on Steam was ‘Counter-Strike: Condition Zero’. The first game released by another company through Steam is ‘Codename: Gordon’. Valve said, “‘Codename: Gordon’ is now retired, but it is an important part of Steam’s history.”

Valve introduces the screenshot function, Greenlight system, and timing of introduction of trading cards on Steam, along with social issues. For example, when the first ‘Steam Awards’ was held in 2016, ‘Pokemon Go’ and ‘TikTok’ were introduced.

Valve said, “Thank you once again for joining us on this wonderful journey over the past 20 years,” and added, “Please take a look at the Points Shop, where we have some free items featuring artwork by our Claire Hummel.”
