Vaccination starts on January 18, extra location in Terneuzen

You can get vaccinated in the Zeelandhallen in Goes or in the ZorgSaam hospital in Terneuzen. The location in Terneuzen is an extra location. Normally, the corona vaccine is administered at one central location in the GGD region, but an exception has been made for Zeeland.

Exception position

According to Joke Gaemers, Director of Public Health at GGD Zeeland, this exceptional position is necessary because of the unique geography of our province. “As a Zeeuwse GGD region, we cover a large area and people live scattered. We also want to prevent people having to travel through the Westerscheldetunnel and spend a lot of time to get their injection.”

“Low threshold contributes to people’s willingness to vaccinate”, Gaemers continues. “Together with the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the RIVM and GGD GHOR Nederland, it has therefore been decided to set up an additional location in Terneuzen. We are very happy with that.”

But according to Gaemers there is a side note: the location in Terneuzen will only remain open if sufficient use is made of it. “The location in Terneuzen is a pilot. To prevent waste of the vaccine, sufficient people must use the location.”

First care workers

The first groups to be eligible for a vaccination are employees of nursing homes, care for the disabled, community nursing and Wmo support. From 4 January, employees will be invited through their employer. Anyone who receives an invitation can make an appointment by telephone.

Until now it was not clear to whom the first vaccines will be distributed, because the package leaflet of the vaccine had not yet been published. This must show which vaccine is best suited for which target group. That leaflet is now available. The GGDs can only make preparations now that this information is known. Only now can they arrange the systems and put the call centers in order.

First spraying in Utrecht

The vaccination will start earlier nationally. The first syringes will be placed in Utrecht on 8 January. This is followed by the GGD regions of Rotterdam and Hart voor Brabant, which includes Den Bosch and Tilburg.

Vaccinations will start in December in many other European countries. “We prefer to opt for care and safety rather than speed, so that we don’t have to think ‘oops’ when things go wrong”, Sjaak de Gouw, director of the national GGD umbrella GGD GHOR said earlier.

‘Learning from England’

“We are now also learning from England, for example,” continues De Gouw. Vaccination has already started there, but due to errors in the registration, it was not always properly recorded who received the vaccine when, which is important for the second injection after three to four weeks. “That is something we can now take into account.”
