Max Verstappen se na startu prokousal až na konečnou čtvrtou pozici. Na trati postavené společností Honda dodávající Red Bullu motory, si Verstappen dojel pro vítězství prakticky systémem start-cíl. První místo rodák z belgického Hasseltu opustil jen při výměně pneumatik. Byl to příjemný závod, auto bylo stále lepší a lepší, chválil si do týmových vysílaček Verstappen, který od začátku loňské sezony vyhrál 22 z 26 závodů. Minule jsme trochu zakopli, ale jsem moc šťastný, že jsme zpět na vrcholu, dodal šampion po třetím double Red Bullu v sezoně.
Se závodem byl spokojen i Pérez, který v průběžném pořadí MS předstihl Leclerca. Jsme teď v dobré fázi. Myslím, že když jsme silní na tratích, jako je tahle, s mnoha rychlými zatáčkami, tak můžeme být silní všude jinde, řekl čtyřicetiletý Mexičan.
Sainz jel závod s jinou strategií než Leclerc, který byl v boxech pouze jednou. V závěrečné fázi závodu měl Španěl čerstvé pneumatiky a osm kol před koncem předjel týmového kolegu. Bylo to tam docela těžké. Napadlo mě, jestli nebyl jen jeden pit stop rychlejší, a my jsme byli na dvou. Musel jsem dneska hodně předjíždět, uvedl madridský rodák, který ve Ferrari po sezoně nahradil Brita Lewise Hamiltona.
Za dvěma Red Bully a Ferrari dojel pátý Brit Lando Norris z McLarenu, šestý skončil bývalý šampion Fernando Alonso z Aston Martinu. První desítku uzavřel k radosti japonských fanoušků Juki Cunoda z Racing Bulls a poprvé v domácí Grand Prix bodoval.
Pravděpodobně nejdramatičtější okamžik závodu se odehrál hned v prvním kole, kdy po kontaktu havarovali Australan Daniel Ricciardo a Alex Albon z Thajska. Oba odešli z místa nehody po svých bez zjevného zranění. Závod byl zhruba na půl hodiny zastaven kvůli opravě bariéry a klidu trosek vozů.
