The health department began providing additional information on COVID-19 vaccinations in Utah on Saturday. The United States Food and Drug Administration has so far approved two vaccines, from Pfizer and Moderna, and the Pfizer vaccine has started to be used in Utah. The Department of Health reports that 3,648 first doses of the vaccine have been administered to date; the Pfizer vaccine requires two doses.

The department further reported that 23,400 doses of the vaccine have been shipped to Utah by the federal government so far.

“There will be a time lag between when the vaccines are shipped, administered to a person and ultimately reported to UDOH,” the department said in an email. “For this reason, the number of people vaccinated will potentially be less than the total number of vaccines shipped 7 days or more. “

Utah is currently vaccinating state health workers. Frontline workers who work with patients with COVID-19 were considered the highest priority for vaccination.

On Saturday, the health department said 559 Utahns were currently hospitalized with COVID-19 and 218 of those patients were in intensive treatment. The new case figure comes as an additional 10,101 Utahns have been tested.

Over the past week, the state recorded an average of 2,454 new cases per day and a positive test percentage of 22.1%.
