Used cars become more expensive. Interest in them is growing

The dynamic development of the average sales price of used cars is recorded by the AAA Auto network of used cars. While in April the price fell to 224 thousand crowns, by September it rose to 239 thousand, while in June and July used cars were sold for another two thousand tracks. Almost the whole of last year, the price remained stable below 230 thousand crowns.

“By the end of the year, prices could rise by another up to ten percent,” assumes Petr Vaněček, AAA Auto’s operations director. According to him, the reasons include the spring shutdown of production and sales of new cars, which also reduced the supply of used cars. At the same time, their imports to the Czech Republic decreased significantly.

“Another factor is the previous rise in price of new cars due to emission standards and investments in electromobility. Higher prices of new cars will always be reflected in used prices with a certain delay, “adds Vaněček.

The growth of prices is also evidenced by data from the Czech start-up Carvago, which sells around one million used cars from all over Europe online. “The value of cars sold is three to five percent higher year-on-year. Before the corona crisis, for example, there were ninety thousand cars on offer on the Sauto.cz portal, today there are around 78 thousand of them. We are also seeing a decrease of about one-fifth in Germany on the Mobil.de portal, ”recalls Jakub Šulta, CEO of Carvaga. The start-up has previously stated that, according to his data, the domestic used market fell by almost half in the first half of the year, ie by 27 billion crowns. Only 120,000 cars were sold.

There are several reasons for the rise in prices of used cars. “I also explain the trend by the insufficient offer of new used cars. Companies are careful when buying new cars and there are also complications in the delivery of these cars, more precisely in long delivery times. At the same time, the demand for individual mobility is growing, ”says automotive expert Petr Knap, EY’s partner. The gradual shift of people from public to individual transport is explained by fears of a possible infection in public transport.

A similar development is far from limited to the Czech Republic. “The average new car will lose forty percent of its original price within three years. On the contrary, the value of vehicles used for three years has increased by 3.2 percent in the last six months, “Reuters wrote, referring to data on the US market, which was presented by the start-up CarEdge.com.

A similar development occurs in some cases in the Czech Republic. The once common Škoda 120 or Favorit models, which were handed over “for transport” a few years ago, are now sold for more than a hundred thousand, Vaněček recalls. Usually, however, the increase in prices, in the order of hundreds of thousands, concerns exceptional cars or collectibles: for example, the Mercedes G or the Suzuki Jimny.

“For example, five years ago, our company purchased a new Tesla Model S for 2.9 million, which after about two years sold by three hundred thousand tracks,” says Vaněček.
