JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – A number of vehicle owners often refuel with octane numbers higher than the standard recommendation. Some reason, engine performance will be more pronounced, and efficiency will be better.
But filling fuel with higher specs, it turns out, has a negative effect on the engine. One of them actually arises a lot of crust and residual carbon in the combustion chamber.
For example for vehicles with RON 90 recommended fuel, but instead filled with BBM with RON 98.

“Engine performance will decrease, which obviously can cause emissions not as expected,” said Endro Sutarno, Technical Service Division of PT Astra Honda Motor, in a virtual discussion (6/27/2020).
“If the octane value is too high, the fuel will not burn completely,” he said.
Events of decreased performance, until emissions are too concentrated, it can also be experienced by four-wheeled vehicles.

Nurkholis, National Technical Leader of PT Toyota Astra Motor, said that fuel combustion would not be perfect when the octane value contained was lower or higher than the manufacturer’s recommendations.
According to him, the manufacturer recommends the octane value according to recommendations so that fuel combustion can be controlled. Combustion indicator that can be controlled is when the gasoline burns out during the ignition process.
“If it doesn’t burn out completely, there will be remnants of particles that don’t burn out. The rest of the combustion will have an effect on the emissions, the sensor will be covered with crust and so on, “said Nurkholis.

In addition, the effect of using high-octane gasoline on low compression engines, that is, occurs fuel dilution. Or the mixing of oil with fuel.
“The remaining unburned gasoline can infiltrate the oil tank through the piston gap,” said Tri Yuswidjadjanto Zaenuri, Energy Conversion Expert from the Faculty of Engineering and Aerospace of the Bandung Institute of Technology, on the same occasion.
This condition makes the oil thinner and changes the color and aroma of the oil. As a result oil can not lubricate the engine perfectly.
“Oil that has been runny is not able to form a film layer, so oil is not able to protect the friction between components in the engine. Over time the components that are not well lubricated can be damaged and even broken, “he said.
