As of July 1st, there will be background checks on every gun purchase, Governor Ralph Northam said on Friday (local time) on Twitter after signing several laws.
The authorities should in future be able to temporarily take away their weapons if they pose a risk to themselves or to others, according to a statement by the governor. In addition, only one handgun per person may be purchased per month. This should prevent weapons from being bought or traded in stock.
Take “sensible measures”
It was time to take “bold, sensible action,” Northam said. With a much-discussed ban on assault rifles, Northam could not prevail.
In January, thousands of gun supporters protested against tougher gun laws in Richmond, the state’s capital, under strict security. In the United States, where guns are usually very easy to buy, gunmen often fire around schools, shopping malls, or other public places.
