Immigration and its management are a major headache for most Western countries. In the US, it tends to dominate in the run-up to November’s presidential election, hurting Joe Biden’s prestige and re-election prospects.
As the Pacemaker writes, VolThe numbers are revealing: in 2023, the US received ten times more illegal arrivals than all of Europe combined, about 3 million. The remarkable thing is that the arrivals do not concern only Latin Americans but many Chinese, Africans and 50,000 Turks, who arrive in America via Mexico. Americans, diplomatic sources tell me, have been “freaking out” about Turkish immigrants coming from Mexico. The border rangers were caught off guard and are hunting them every day..
In this context, the visit of the Minister of Immigration, Dimitris Kairides, to Washington is of particular interest, according to the Pacemaker. The recent success of reducing illegal arrivals in the Evros and the Aegean, the securing of additional European aid of 2 billion euros in total and the return to legality of those immigrants who have lived here for years and work, something that the USA has been trying to achieve for four decades without succeeding, they changed Greece’s reception in America and on the issue of immigration.
Now, Mr. Kairides is preparing, I learn, to mediate in Brussels to strengthen the Euro-American dialogue and the issue of immigration, since illegal flows in Mexico can easily be diverted to the Mediterranean and vice versa, and joint action is needed to combat globalized networks of traffickers.
